She wields a decades-old weapon but she managed to win a gold medal and set a new World University Games record with it.

At only 22 years of age, Laura Ilie brought the Romanian delegation its only medal this year, in the air rifle competition of the Games.

Funny enough, her journey to sporting glory started with an F in her physical education class.

She has only five years of shooting behind her, yet she managed to defeat the best sporting shooters in the world at this year's University Games. Her name is Laura-Georgeta Ilie.

She achieved this success with a 30-year old rifle, while the other contestants were shooting latest generation guns.

Even more bewildering was the news that such a rifle had set a new World University Games record: 590 points out of 600, one step away from the world record!

She didn't always dream of firing a gun. It was a pure coincidence. Her physical education teacher gave her an F and, in order to improve her grade, she went to a club where they were scouting for sporting shooters.

Now she's a multiple champion of Romania and she dreams of participating in the Olympic Games. Moreover as statistics show that 70 percent of the World University Games gold medallists eventually become Olympic athletes.
