Romanian fencer Simona Gherman on Wednesday won the gold medal in the women's epee individual event of the European Fencing Championships in Torun, Poland, after defeating her fellow fencer Ana Maria Popescu, 9-5.
Playing on the main draw of the competition, Gherman successively defeated French Josephine Coquin (13-12), Estonians Irina Embrich (15-11) and Julia Beljajeva (15-12); German Monika Sozanska (13-10) in the quarter-finals, and Polish Renata Knapik-Miazga (15-12) in the semi-finals.
Ana Maria Popescu defeated Aleksandra Zamachowska (15-13), Estonian Kristina Kuusk (15-7), Ukrainian Yana Shemyakina (15-9), Simona Pop (15-9) in the quarter-finals and Hungarian Emese Szasz (13-12) in the semi-finals.
Gherman, 31, thus won her second European title in women's epee individual, adding to her 2012 title, as well as her 7th medal in the European championships. Romanians Simona Pop and Loredana Dinu finished 7th and 43rd, respectively.
In the men's sabre individual contest, Romanian Tiberiu Dolniceanu lost in the round of 16 to Georgian Mikheil Mardaleishvili (14-15). Also losing at the same stage were Romanians Iulian Teodosiu, to French Nicolas Rousset (14-15), and Alin Badea to Russian Kamil Inraghimov (11-15).
