The European Commission announced on Thursday, the initiation of a legal action before the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU) against Romania for noncompliance with the EU legislation on waste produced by extractive industries.
According to a press release of the European executive, the legal action concerns the Boşneag pond, a sludge bed of 102 acres where waste generated by the exploitation of copper and zinc mines in Moldova Noua, Caras Severin was discharged, Mediafax informs.
Currently, the lake is almost abandoned and represents a major source of pollution, spreading toxic dust that poses a significant risk to human health and the environment.
The Commission notes that Romania has agreed to take steps to solve the problem, but progress has been insufficient.
