"Crops needed rain in May and June, not in July, and we expected a wheat production according to farmer’s estimates at a record production of 8,000,000 tons, the largest quantity obtained in Romania, but because of rain fell the quantity dropped. However, we do have better production than last year, we have 7.37 million tons, which is an important precondition for Romanian exports and for the agriculture development, " Constantine said, according to Agerpres.
In terms of wheat quality, the minister did not provide any details as tests have not been yet performed, but certainly rains fallen during harvest will influence the quality of the 2014 wheat crop.
On the other hand, rapeseed registered a record production, according to the Minister of Agriculture, given that it was introduced into cultivation in the 1970s.
"In rapeseed I may say that it is the highest in history among the last 45 years, while the rapeseed culture was introduced only in 1970, I also hope that the July rains were beneficial to sunflower and maize. All these productions are important, not only for agriculture but also for their importance in the economic development of Romania ", the minister added.
According to MARD, the production of wheat harvested on 99% of the area amounts to 7,373,000 tonnes (7,343,000 tons in 2013), and the rapeseed harvest amounts to 1.089 million tons, compared to 647,811 tons in 2013.
