The President’s foreign policy costs us billions. The head of the state should be a catalyst for partnerships with other countries, both politically and economically. By the powers given by the function, the President must maintain and promote Romania's interests abroad by ambassadors and representations in various European and international meetings.

Or, Basescu has often spread the scandal seed, sending in the country and abroad signals of political and economic uncertainty.

The latest output of this kind by president, the Lukoil scandal demonstrates unequivocally the lack of national interest.

"Why don’t you guys take off from here if you do not comply with state regulations, go away but you should not believe that you are taking the oil refinery with you ", Băsescu told the Lukoil people on October 9.

But more serious is the fact that the president has cast away his citizens, claiming the state’s inability to help them.

"Let’s not make a drama out of that. Romania’s biggest objective was the liberalization of labor, the right to go where life is better, where their work is properly rewarded. The Romanian state cannot pay doctors and teachers as they deserve to be paid.. (...)I thank this group of Romanians struggling to work abroad .... imagine if the 2 million Romanians in Italy, Spain, France, Germany would come to receive unemployment benefits in Romania when we already have a deficient fund for unemployment? "Basescu said in August 2010.

The president’ role

"The President of Romania represents the Romanian state and he is the guarantor of national independence, unity and territorial integrity. The President of Romania shall guard the observance of the Constitution and the proper functioning of public authorities. For this purpose, he shall act as a mediator between the powers of the state and between the state and society. "

"The President concludes international treaties on behalf of Romania, negotiated by the Government, and submits them to Parliament for ratification within a reasonable time. (...) The President, at the proposal of the Government, accredits and discharges diplomatic envoys of Romania and approves the establishment, disestablishment of the rank of diplomatic missions. The representatives of the diplomatic envoys are accredited with the President of Romania. "
