The candidate with the best chances to win the presidential elections is Prime Minister Victor Ponta. He is the highest rated in the polls and has already announced his intention to run. The official launch of the candidacy will be made on July 29 during the meeting of the PSD National Council to be held in Craiova.
Another politician targeting the Presidency office is Senate Chairman Călin Popescu Tariceanu. Although he founded a party, the Liberal Reformist Party, Tăriceanu will most likely compete as an independent candidate.
From the PNL-PDL alliance, the candidate will be announced in early August, after Klaus Iohannis, freshly anointed as the Liberals candidate for the presidency will join an internal competition with PDL’s Catalin Predoiu..
From the PDL Monica Macovei has also expressed her intention to candidate and along the self-appointed candidate in the presidential elections and new party colleague, Mihai Razvan Ungureanu.
After losing the party internal competition, Crin Antonescu could also be a possible independent candidate. Also as independent could run the former presidential candidate of the PSD in 2009 Mircea Geoana.
Although Traian Basescu's party has designated its candidate for the presidency in the person of Cristian Diaconescu, things can change until November. Elena Udrea's intention to be more than the president of the party is well known.
Other candidates who will compete in the elections are Dan Diaconescu of PPDD and Kelemen Hunor of UDMR.
Ioan Ghişe, Marius Cernea and Viorel Cataramă will run as independant.
