"I’ve opened a formal correspondence with director Meleşcanu and asked him to tell me if there are in the Government covered officers or former covered officers. He said it's a state secret, regardless of the fact that the president has access to any state secrets, " Basescu said.
"My decision to publicly open this topic has been made because a huge precedent has been created now in which the President requires information not about the operatives covered list, but about members of the government, and I’ve been told that they cannot communicate that to me because it is state secret according to a government decision, " Traian Basescu continued.
The President added that for this reason, he has never trusted the information received from the former head of SIE.
"This thing will remain in the history of the service. I think this is the first time when Romania’s head of state requires an information from the intelligence service and the service has and refuses to give it to the president. From that point on until Meleşcanu left the service, I've never trusted what he said to me, " Basescu said.
