At the same time, Basescu said that during the campaign for the presidential elections they needed to addressed such themes as the relationship with the United States, the defense budget and the unspent cohesion funds.
"Romania is in a credibility crisis as a state of the rule of law, after the coup in the summer of 2012. With all my cohabitation pact, I was not able to convince that the current government in power is the power that will be one hundred percent sure to strengthen the rule of law, because Ponta's frequent statements in which he defends the corrupt, threatening, interfering with justice, raised many question marks regarding the institutional cooperation pact I signed with Ponta " Basescu said at the Cotroceni Palace.
The President also accused Victor Ponta and Klaus Iohannis that they do not respond to the main issues, including that of the unspent cohesion funds.
"I have not heard Ponta nor Iohannis saying what the government should do, if they win the elections, so that Romania would salvage what can be saved of the 12 billion unspent cohesion funds remaining " Basescu said.
"Under the dispute guise of whose side Basescu is on, they do not actually want to talk about important issues. I understand Ponta, he must flee from bad governance. But why doesn’t Iohannis speak about it . Why? Because they are linked to Grivco. That is why Iohannis does not speak, "he added.
Traian Basescu was not reluctant about giving advice to the two candidates on issues that should be addressed in the campaign.
"I would refer to my position on strengthening justice. I would refer to something that today the candidates attitude places in doubt : do we strengthen the strategic partnership with the USA or not? This is something which all candidates should answer to. Or we aim towards Berlin, according to some, or we mix up something in the Dâmboviţa style, a little bit with America , a little bit with Russia a little with China and the we will see what next ? Such an approach is a treacherous approach, which is detrimental to Romania, "the president said.
Also, Traian Basescu insisted that he wanted to hear the two talk about the defense budget, about how the NATO summit targets set for Romania in Newport will be implemented, and the relationship with Ukraine, Romania's position about the Islamic State group and the crisis in the Middle East.
"There are things they do not address, even if they have them written somewhere in a program, they remain un-debated because they have only one concern: who of these two does Basescu support, who of these two has an arrangement with Basescu " Basescu concluded.
