Băsescu suggested that the best solution for the security of Moldova would be to join NATO.
Asked whether the Republic of Moldova could join the EU with a frozen conflict on its territory, TRaian Basescu showed that the European Union already has a precedent with Cyprus and it would not allow the take over of another country with interior conflicts.
" I give you an honest and firm reply — not a chance. One can negotiate, anything is possible but you cannot join the EU with a frozen conflict on your territory", Băsescu said.
In this context, he reiterated the need for Russia to fulfill the commitments made in 1999 to withdraw its weapons and troops from the Republic of Moldova.
He also called for a change of the '5 +2' format negotiations so as to be 'much more flexible'. According to the Romanian president, it would have to be made up from the EU, USA, Russia and Moldova, without Ukraine, OSCE and Tiraspol.
Traian Basescu suggested that Moldova should consider the opportunity to terminate its neutrality.
"Moldova declared its neutrality, but to be neutral you have to be recognized as such by the others and to guarantee your territorial integrity. But Moldova declared itself neutral, but has a conflict on its territory," Basescu said claiming that " Moldovan politicians should have a more firm standpoint " in this regard.
