The competition for taking over the helm of the main ruling party in Romania has produced an unexpected victor. Former deputy Prime Minister Liviu Dragnea has become the new president of the Social Democratic Party, after he obtained more votes than Rovana Plumb, who was backed by the former leader, Premier Victor Ponta himself. Last week, Rovana Plumb had been nominated as new head of the Social-Democrats and yesterday's vote seemed to be a mere formality.
