Former head of SIE Teodor Melescanu commented on the Tuesday edition of the "Daily Summary" show Traian Basescu's statements regarding his refusal to provide the President with the Service’s list of undercover officers.

Meleşcanu said that the country’s president is entitled to getting any information that falls under the state secret as long as it is necessary for him to fulfill his duties.

"But he does not need to know all the details, for instance the names of the operations ", he underlined.

"It is an attempt to mix things up. (...) Since this was a step that was not according to the law, I said very clearly that I cannot break the law. Other than that, turning an institutional relationship into a personal relationship, I find that to be a cheap game, " the former head of SIE said.

Teodor Melescanu showed that during his service with the SIE, he has not heard about another head of state that would have asked to an intelligence service to disclose their own employees.

Mihai Gadea asked what would happen if ever, such an agent's identity would be revealed, Meleşcanu answered: "A small earthquake for the service , a huge image problem for Romania ".

President Traian Basescu said on Monday at a television station that Victor Ponta was a SIE officer, pointing to a government decision, initiated by Teodor Melescanu and signed by the Prime Minister , which extended the protection granted to intelligence officers also to those who have ended their relationships with the Service.

In response, Meleşcanu specified that he did not initiate the GD in question, but has stated that he considered it "appropriate" to amend the law, since there was a possibility that the information could be useful in the campaign.
