The Senate adopted the amendment to the referendum law to reduce the turnout threshold
The Senate’s plenum adopted on Tuesday by 92 votes "for" and 29 "against" the legislative initiative to amend the referendum law in order to reduce the turnout threshold for this type of voting by 30%, and to introduce a conditional vote of 25% of voters to validate the results, Mediafax reports.

The Senators adopted the legislative initiative signed by Valeriu Zgonea, Florin Iordache, Eugen Bogdan Nicolicea Ciuc regarding the amendment of the referendum law.

The legislative proposal will make the object of a final voting in the Chamber of Deputies and it provides for the reduction of the turnout threshold for referendums from 50% to 30%. However, the draft provides for the introduction of a minimum turnout threshold of 25% for at least one of the options submitted in the referendum in order to validate the elections results.

In the debate, Liberal Senator Ioan Ghişe called for the elimination of the quorum provision in the referendum law requesting that the draft be sent back to the specialty committees.

His proposal was not supported by the Liberal Senators leader, Puiu Haşotti but the request was repeated at the initiative of Senator Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, who argued in favor of maintaining a quorum of 50%.

The request for referral by the specialized committees made by Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu was rejected by 27 votes "in favour " and 94 "against’.
