SMURD’s angels wings broke last night in a fateful moment. The helicopter with  four people in it  crashed in the  almost frozen waters of lake Siutghiol, near  Mamaia resort.

The  doctor, the pregnant nurse, the pilot and the copilot shouted  out for help with their last breath.

Unfortunately, nothing could be done for them. The drama and frustration of those who save lives every day but who could not be saved in their turn is heartbreaking.

There are also many questions arising related to the late intervention of firefighters and of the way they managed to get to the helicopter’s wreck in the middle of the lake.

Long search and rescue missions  are deployed early in the morning. Teams of divers and doctors from SMURD have  worked around the clock to save the four heroes crushed into the lake.

First, they found the doctor  who died in hospital just hours after she had been taken out of the freezing waters. The copilot  was pulled  ashore after spending five hours in water. He was in cardiopulmonary arrest. And so was the pilot.

Around four o’clock the  nurse’s body , who had announced her boyfriend she was expecting shortly before boarding the helicopter, was also pulled ashore. After this tragedy, the other SEVEN SMURD helicopters in the country were kept on the ground.

The SMURD helicopter had transported  a patient from Tulcea. Around 4:20 p.m. while returning to Tulcea, it crashed in Lake Siutghiol, nearby Mamaia resort. Witnesses on shore immediately called 112 and announced that there were four people on board the aircraft: pilot, copilot, a physician and a nurse.

The first team of rescuers found the doctor  from SMURD at the water surface, attached to the helicopter wreckage.

The woman had severe hypothermia because the Siutghiol lake water temperature  was about 0 degrees Celsius. Doctors immediately started CPR on the lake shore.

After about 40 minutes, the woman was taken to hospital, but her condition was critical. She died a few hours later, around midnight.
Meanwhile, on Lake Siutghiol, rescuers searched for the other three victims. They managed to find another colleague around 21.30.

The  co-pilot who was in hypothermic shock. They  started resuscitation, but the chances of survival were extremely small. Shortly afterwards the pilot was found too, also in a hypothermic shock.

The last victim of the accident was found by rescuers in the cold waters of the lake at around four in the morning. It was  the nurse who accompanied the crew.

She had confirmed to her boyfriend that she was pregnant with only half an hour before the helicopter crash.
The man was a ship captain and he realized immediately that the chances of survival in the frozen waters of the lake were minimal.

Witnesses complained that the rescuers arrived late at the crash scene. Some argue that all four crew members were alive after the helicopter crashed in the water.

Experts say it is unlikely that the helicopter may have crashed due to bad weather conditions.
