Romania can take over, for starters, 3,500 refugees from Ukraine, said President Traian Basescu on Wednesday, referring to the open conflict in the neighbouring country, announcing also that Romania will agree in the FAC to give individual sanctions Ukrainian officials.

"Regarding Ukraine, we had a discussion about accommodation for refugees with the decision bodies and information structures responsible to ensure border safety and with MAE" Basescu said.

According to him, the overall assessment is that Romania must show full stability

"Romania is ready if there is a flow of immigrants to take over , of course in an initial stage, around 3,500," the president said.

Traian Basescu also said that on Thursday, at the extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), Romania would agree with individual penalties for those responsible for the application of excessive force in Kiev, but stressed that applying economic sanctions against Ukraine was not appropriate.

"A limitation has been overstepped and they cannot proceed further (...) The police was provoked, but the response was disproportionate. Those 25 deaths are exemplifying the fact that both parties have overstepped some limits and the main responsibility lies with the state who responded with a disproportionate force to the challenges, " Basescu said.

Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean attends Thursday in Brussels, the extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers of the EU Member States to address the situation in Ukraine, MAE reports.

The ministerial meeting will be an occasion for debate about the latest developments and the EU approach to the situation in Kiev, the release says.
