Businessman Dinu Patriciu has died Tuesday in London. Businessman, politician and one of the richest men in Romania, Patricius died at 64 years.
Dinu Patriciu had been suffering for several years of a progressive liver disease and was following treatment in London.
The information has been confirmed for Antena 3 by Petre Roman, a close friend of Dinu Patriciu.
"It is very sad news for me, for my family. We were bound by Christian ties, he was the testimony to our wedding and the godfather of my child, of Petrişor " Petre Roman said. "I knew he had been struggling between life and death for some time," Petre Roman said.
Dinu Patriciu’s doctor, Mihai Voiculescu stated for Mediafax that the businessman died at the Royal Free Hospital in London, most likely due to an infection after the liver transplantation.
" Dinu Patriciu has died in a London hospital with a possible post transplant infection, excluding any medical negligence. Dinu Patriciu has died in the Royal Free Hospital in London where he would go frequently for checkups monitoring his post-transplant evolution" , Professor dr. Mihai Voiculescu said, a friend for over 30 years to businessman whom he treated for 20 years of various medical problems.
The doctor said that Dinu Patriciu’s liver ailments occurred over the last three years, during which time he underwent investigations in the AKH Hospital in Vienna, Niguarda Hospital in Milan, and London.
“Since his medical condition was not a favorable one, we began preparing for the transplant. After a year and a half Dinu Patriciu underwent a liver transplant intervention at a hospital in Milan. Work related responsibilities determined him to monitor his health in a hospital in London, the Royal Free Hospital, " Mihai Voiculescu said.
"It's possible due to the low immunological status that he may have developed an infection. I can say that he received the best care and any medical negligence is excluded," prof. Voiculescu said.
According to sources close to the family, Dinu Patriciu could be buried in London.
Businessman Dinu Patriciu was born August 3, 1950, in Bucharest and had oil companies, banking and real estate business.
Patriciu owned real estate assets in Germany, Sweden and Poland, valued at about 1.1 billion euros during the crisis. In Romania, the properties portfolio of Patriciu comprised Romana Offices, Cubic Center and Evo Center (Pipera), Baneasa Business Center, Cascade Offices (Buzeşti) or Floreasca 2 Business Center. However, the businessman also held a fund with the AIG / Lincoln in Floreasca Lakeview office building sold last year to the NEPI fund.
In 1990, Dinu Patriciu became a founding member of PNL. In the legislature from 1990 to 1992, he was elected as MP for the Liberal Party. Dinu Patriciu was also a deputy in the legislature 2000-2004, being elected as a representative of the Liberal Party.
Dinu Patriciu retired from politics in 2003 and in 2012 he underwent a liver transplant at a clinic in Italy.
