Camelia Toader was appointed by the Government for the office of judge of the European Union Court of Justice of the by decision approved on Wednesday. Camelia Toader, Laura Ivanovici şi Claudia Costea were nominated after interviews with the Ministry of Justice, for the office of judge of the ECJ to represent Romania at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).

Camelia Toader was Judge at the High Court of Cassation and Justice and since 2006 she has been assigned as judge with the ECJ. The procedure for appointing judges to the ECJ is provided by the Treaty on the European Union (TFEU) and the corresponding provisions of the Statute of the European Court of Justice. Under Article 253 of the Treaty, the ECJ judges and attorneys are appointed by common agreement of the governments of the Member States for a period of six years after consultation with the Committee referred to in Article 255 TFEU.


On January 14, the Government endorsed the Memorandum initiated by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on "Approval of the procedure for the nomination of the Romanian candidate for the office of judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union."

Thus, in order to be appointed Romania's candidate for the office of judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union all the independence guarantees have to be met. Observance of the requirements to exercise the highest judiciary positions in Romania also have to be met . The candidate for this position has to have a very good professional reputation, moral and civic standing.
