A huge corruption scandal with political implications has set the Romanian tabloid press on fire. Anti-corruption prosecutors have conducted dozens of searches in a case against media moguls, lawyers and politicians.
Prosecutors searched the headquarters of the Cancan media group for documents and evidence to support charges of money laundering and influence peddling.
Over the years, the press group that came under the close scrutiny of anti-graft prosecutors was involved in countless scandalous disputes with public figures, which ended in protracted lawsuits.
Radu Budeanu, the one who had founded and was managing the media group in 2011 and 2012, when the offences were allegedly committed, is to be questioned but his friends say he left the country shortly before the scandal broke out.
