Romanians don't seem to care about their health but they give bribes of hundreds of lei in hospitals. That's because we consult a doctor when it's almost too late. Seven out of ten Romanians never stepped into a medical office last year. Not even for a routine examination. It's not expensive, but one has to wait many months on end for it.
Although prices of medical examinations at public healthcare clinics are low, seven out of ten Romanians never consulted a doctor last year.
The problem is that Romanians think they are as healthy as a horse. According to the National Statistics Institute more than 70 per cent of us think we are very healthy. Only one in five Romanians has doubts about it and almost 9 percent admit they have a precarious health.
More often than not, the waiting time before a medical examination is also to blame. For an endocrine check-up, for instance, one can wait up to six months. At a private clinic, such an examination is made on the spot, but it costs almost ten times more.
