President Klaus Iohannis announced Thursday in a press statement that he nominated MEP Eduard Hellvig for the position of Director of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), after consultation with leaders of political parties.
According to sources, President Klaus Iohannis has met with Prime Minister Victor Ponta, this morning, to discuss the appointment of a person as head of SRI.
The SRI director position has become vacant after George Maior submitted his resignation at the end of January.

- as you know, both Intelligence services have been left without a director recently from various reasons.
- lately, due to developments on the political scene and the public environment, SRI has been many often in the public eye.
-I’ve considered that in times like this we need the SRI to have a full team to reinstate the necessary calmness. Therefore, I have decided to make a nomination for the SRI director position.
-tonight, I have signed the letter addressed to the president of the two chambers and proposed Mr. Eduard Raul Hellvig. I’ve had meetings with leaders of political parties and I have informed them about this intention
What recommends Edward Hellvig for this position:
- When I thought of a person to propose, I sought someone who is ready for such a position, who has the necessary training, the energy needed who knows politicians, who has sufficient knowledge about the SRI activity and is a person who comes to bring calm needed in this area. I looked for a person who for me is the guarantee of a process of modernization and Europeanization of SRI.
When journalists asked if he had a proposition for the leadership of SIE and DIICOT, Iohannis refused to give names, saying he expected the proposition of the Ministry of Justice for the DIICOT.
