Secretary of the Chamber Niculae Mircovici announced in the Parliament that, out of 564 MPs, 513 MPs voted. For the appointment of Eduard Hellvig 498 MPs voted in favor and there were only 15 votes against, Mediafax reports.

“There are two lines of action I consider essential: fighting corruption and developing the defense capacity of national security. Although there have been major advances in recent years, corruption remains a risk factor for national security, affecting the economy and undermining the functioning of institutions "said Eduard Hellvig in the Parliament, after his validation as director of SRI.

Hellvig mentioned the need for a strong state.

"When history might not have to bear with us, if we want Romania to remain standing, we should have a strong state, built on a democratic partnership with its citizens and solid institutional pillars" Hellvig explained.

He said he wanted to deepen the operational cooperation and exchange of information with the Euro-Atlantic partners, especially the US, in the context of the escalating tensions in our region and the rotating military-strategic decisions of NATO in Eastern Europe.

The SRI Director said that the institution he leads underwent in recent years a comprehensive reorganization and modernization, becoming a vector of national stability.

The SRI Control Commission endorsed last week his nomination for this position, the proposal being made by President Klaus Iohannis, with seven votes "for" and one "against".
