Former president Traian Băsescu will be called in for hearings at the General Prosecution Office as suspect in the blackmail case open by PSD senator Gabriela Firea.

The announcement was made by journalist Adina Anghelescu, Thursday during the Daily Summary show on Antena 3.
Adina Anghelescu said that, in the above mentioned case file, documents were requested from the HCCJ Prosecution Office whose arrival is pending.
A part of the aforesaid documents had already arrived at the court and, once they all arrived, the former president Traian Băsescu will be called in for hearings as suspect, the journalist added.

On January 23, Gabriela Firea was heard by prosecutors of the Prosecutor's Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice (GPO), in the case that she accused the former President Traian Basescu of blackmail.

Firea was interviewed in this case after on December 30, 2014, investigators reopened the file, as the former head of state no longer enjoyed immunity after the mandate completion . Investigators will determine whether prosecution will be extended.

On April 18, 2014, the Supreme Court Prosecutor announced that he ordered the prosecution for blackmail following the complaint submitted by Gabriela Firea against Basescu, joined by the lawmakers referral. However, the initiation of criminal proceedings were suspended because the President had immunity at the time.

The Basescu - Firea scandal started after the former president, referring to the PSD Senator, stated he could say "she is a good journalist, but as a lawyer, she is catastrophic." "She should better mind her own business and deal with what is happening on her husband’s estate, where he is mayor. She might not find him at home one day if she is not careful. I hear there are a lot of bad things happening in his parish, "said Basescu, on April 14, 2014
Traian Basescu also added that he recommended Prime Minister Victor Ponta not to take on board the " blackmailer Senator " Gabriela Firea as spokesperson for the coalition during elections, because she was bad luck for the man she wanted to protect. Basescu also reminded the activity conducted by Gabriela Firea during Isarescu’s election campaign for the presidency.
The president’s warning came after Gabriela Firea, member in the Nana Comittee, had stated that the transaction whereby the president’s daughter got the land in Calarasi county was nulled .

Subsequently, the PSD senator has filed on April 16, 2014, a complaint with the Prosecutor of the Supreme Court against Traian Basescu for threat and blackmail.

Traian Băsescu risks up to 7 years in jail for blackmail, after having threatened Firea.
