Over a hundred people are brought by coach on Friday from several counties to the Capital, to be heard as witnesses in the 2012 referendum fraud case, involving also defendant Deputy PM Liviu Dragnea and other 70 people.

Having them fetched into the Capital to appear Friday before the court was a measure ordered by the tribunal on October 3, so that the people concerned should be able to give their testimonies about their participation in the 2012 referendum, because the polling station voters lists featured their names.

The people were brought based on peremptory writs from the counties of Olt, Gorj, Teleorman and Vrancea.

The trial will take place Friday in the premises of the Military Court of Appeal, where there is more space compared to the High Court of Cassation and Justice.

At the appearance on October 3, judges of the supreme court ruled that on October 24 all the witnesses will be heard, because many of them are elderly or with serious health problems and they cannot be made to travel during the cold weather.

The witnesses were heard at the time indicated, many of them being old people with health conditions. The court could not take the testimony of two people having problems hearing and of another old person who got sick in the court room.

In these circumstances, the presiding judge determined that at the next term the remaining witnesses would be called and heard in this case, so as not to create a situation in which elderly or sick people "would have to travel in the middle of the winter. "

In this case, the spouses Marius Marinel and Cristina Predut were tried separately from the other 73 defendants, under the simplified procedure, after they admitted to being guilty. On 2 July, the Supreme Court sentenced the two to one year and four months’ probation and has set them a trial period of three years and four months.

The supreme court recorded on October 7, 2013 the file "fraud in the referendum" in which Liviu Dragnea and other 74 people are investigated and the proceedings began on 15 November.

Liviu Dragnea, general secretary of the PSD at the time, currently MP and deputy prime minister, was indicted for the offense of use of influence or authority by a person who holds a management position in a party in order to obtain for himself or for others undue benefits.
