King Michael I of Romania has been cheered  today by thousands of people gathered at the Elisabeta Palace. The Palace gates were opened for the Romanians who sang "Happy Birthday"  to King Michael.

King Michael has opened his  doors to visitors who filled the Royal Family residence  garden and welcomed the crowd from the balcony of the palace. The appearance of King Michael alongside Crown Princess Margareta and Prince Radu drew a round of applause.

Teodor Meleşcanu, invited on the Daily Summary show, considered that the way  King Michael’s birthday was celebrated "is a very normal and natural gesture to reconcile and  accept our history."

"I have always appreciated the tenure and the manner in which  the King is related to the country," said Melescanu. What happened today is a sign of normality, Meleşcanu added.

Michael became king of Romania in 1927, after the death of his grandfather, King Ferdinand. He  is the descendant of the most important royal and imperial families of Europe, the great-grandson of Queen Victoria of Great Britain and third-degree cousin of Queen Elizabeth II.

Left into exile after the Second World War, the  King continued to advocate the cause of his country. He settled at  Versoix, in Switzerland. After the Revolution Iliescu’s  regime stopped him from returning into the country. He returned in 1992, when thousands of people came to see him.
