President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday on a television station that the choice to supply arms to Ukraine should be left “for much later" because weapons supplies always lead to conflict reinforcement, Mediafax reports.
Asked whether there will be peace in Ukraine, President Klaus Johannis said that European leaders expressed the hope during the informal European Council that the Minsk Agreement will "hold".
"It is, as somebody nicely put it, a ray of hope. More, currently, no, but if this holds, it can lead to more palpable results ", Iohannis specified.
Asked whether the conflict in Ukraine could reach the boarders of Romania, the head of state denied. "No I do not believe that the conflict itself will reach Romania’s boarders, but clearly, as it is now it has already gone too far, if we address the military involvement ", he said.
As regards the supply of arms to Kiev, Klaus Iohannis considered that this option "should be left for much later." "The supply of weapons has never pacified conflict areas, weapons delivery has always led to conflict reinforcement," Iohannis said, stressing that " some room for maneuver if the situation turns to worse " should be left.
"Then is possible that together with the partners, this issue should be re-assessed", the president said.
Referring to the 400.000 Romanian ethnics in Ukraine, Iohannis said that they are affected by this conflict just "as Ukrainians, just as Hungarian ethnics" are, but from the data received, he could not find that there "is an ethnical related pressure".
"There has to be a constant concern of ours what is going on with the Romanians in Ukraine. (...) This is one of the topics I will approach when I am making the visit to Ukraine, on March 17”, Klaus Iohannis stated.
