Romania lost 400 million euros, payments for rural development projects PNDR 2007-2013.

According to a document of the Council of Agriculture and Fisheries obtained by journalists from ecopolitic.ro, Romania has not obtained the extension for the disbursement of payments for rural development projects.

Agriculture Minister Daniel Constantin, asked the European Commission to extend by six months the period for disbursements of payments for rural development projects RDP 2007-2013, hoping he could save the 400 million euros.

Even if the statements made before the requested were optimistic, Daniel Constantin failed to obtain the extension he needed.

"European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Phil Hogan explained that the legislative procedure would not allow the European Commission to amend European legal documents and that such a measure would require approval of the Council and the European Parliament," wrote the ministry headed by Daniel Constantin in a statement which confirmed failure of the negotiations.

An Agriculture Ministry official told Ecopolitic.ro that "Romanian farmers have given up European projects worth nearly 1 billion euros, due to lack of own necessary funds needed for co-financing, under the National Rural Development Program 2007-2013".

According to sources in the Ministry of Agriculture, it would be about hundreds of farmers who decided to terminate the projects at their own initiative.
