Irregularities in Dan Voiculescu’s conviction and the seizure of the Antena 3 office building drew the attention of one of the largest European publications. Journalists from The New Europe write that the case in which the founding president of the Conservative Party was sentenced to serve 10 years in jail was politically motivated.

"It is a settling of accounts by the president of Romania, who wanted to remove in this way his greatest opponent ", the article shows.

"Romania: justice or accounts settling?" the New Europe journalists write, adding that the founder of the Conservative Party was found guilty in the privatization of the Food Research Institute case. The European journal notes that Dan Voiculescu was sentenced to serve 10 years in jail in one of the most controverted case file of the last years.

“Voiculescu’s constant battle with Traian Basescu is of notoriety in Romania, Voiculescu being at the forefront of the President’s two suspension referendums, in 2007 and 2012”, indicates the article published by the neurope.eu.

Prosecutors charged him with money laundering for increasing the registered capital of the company and then transferring his shares to his daughters but the allegation is not backed up, New Europe journalists argue.

Moreover, it is well known that Voiculescu legally and publicly donated all his fortune to his two daughters, Camelia and Corina, in 2006, when none of his businesses were under any legal investigation.

Antena 3 which the New Europe journalists qualified as the best news television in Romania, consistently revealed high level corruption and abuse involving close friend of Basescu, including the president's brother.

“The President’s brother arrest seemed to accelerate Dan Voiculescu’s trial in the Appeal Court. Soon after, the file was assigned to a new panel of judges, promoted on the spot from Bucharest Tribunal, five days before a new court term in the ICA file”, the journalists add.

Along Dan Voiculescu, other 11 defendants, counting the ex-minister of communications, Sorin Pantiş, were sentenced in this case file.
