An important cause of the devastating floods is the massive deforestation that took place in Romania over the last 20 years. The Court of Accounts published last year an audit report on the forest fund for the period 1990-2012 and the conclusion is grim: more than 366,000 hectares of forest were cut illegally and the damage thus incurred amounts to 5 billion euro officially, unofficially it could even be higher, all the more so since the calculations are done based on the lowest market price .

According to Greenpeace, the situation is even worse: in Romania, three hectares of forest are cut every hour.

According to the study cited by the aforementioned organization, in Romania they cut over 3 acres of forest every hour. From information provided by Romsilva, an average of 41 hectares are exploded daily, of which a large part is represented illegal cuts.

Reforestation costs are immense. For example, the forestation of 700 hectares in Arges would cost the authorities about three million.
