Hero policeman Gheorghe Ionescu was buried with full military honours at the Ghencea Militar Cemetery. Flowery speeches were given, cannons were fired and the national anthem was played. 
 
Almost one thousand people attended the funeral service, including family members, friends and fellow officers. Also attending were Police Chief Petre Tobă and Interior Minister Gabriel Oprea. 
 
Hundreds of police officers attended the funeral of their friend, officer Gheorghe Ionescu - the Hound as they used to call him.
 
The wrapped his coffin in Romania's tricolour flag. Six officers bore the casket shoulder high to the tomb, while a devastated family stood watching, tears in their eyes.
 
Deputy Prime Minister Gabriel Oprea, the Minister of Internal Affairs, paid a last tribute to him.
 
Gheorghe Ionescu was killed in the line of duty, after being run down by a car with a Turkish millionaire at the wheel, whom the officer attempted to stop in traffic. 
 
For his scarifice, Gheorghe Ionescu was posthumously promoted to the rank of Police Subinspector. In his honour, cannon fire echoed through the Ghencea military Cemetery and a last police siren as well.
