Most Romanians (96 percent) believe in God, 86 percent believe that the Church provides answers to people's spiritual needs, 69 percent pray daily and more than half go to confession, according to a study by IRES Mediafaxwrites.

While 77% of respondents agree with the idea of what religion means, 17% disagree with this idea.

For 89% of respondents religion was considered important in their family, childhood, and three quarters of respondents (72%) think God is very important in their lives, while another 22% say it is important.
However, 63% of respondents believe that a politician who does not believe in God is not fit to hold a public office.
Regarding the role of the Church, 86% agree that it provides answers to the spiritual needs of people, 76% think that it provides answers to moral questions, 72% to the problems of family life, 61% for youth issues and 59 % for social problems.
At the same time more than two-thirds (69%) of the participants in the study pray at least once a day, 27% several times daily, and 42% once a day, while 13% have this habit several times a week, 6% several times a month, and the rest even less. Only 3% of respondents said they do not pray.

Moreover, 83% of respondents say that prayer helped them a lot in life.
More than half of respondents claim that Christians use to confession, half of them (51%) several times a year and once a quarter a year. One percent say that they confess every week, and 3% claim that they do this once a month.

Changing religion is an isolated phenomenon in Romania, only 4% of respondents say that they have changed over time their religion .

Participation in religious events is high: 45% of respondents participate at least once a month at services or other religious events, 31% attend a few times a year 5% at most once per year, 13% less than annually. Only 5% of respondents say they never go to jobs or other religious events.


More than a quarter of respondents (26%) claim to have been at least once in a pilgrimage, 21% of them several times. Arsene Boca Tomb (Prislop) (21%), Monasteries of Moldova (18%) and the Nicula Monastery (Cluj) are places of pilgrimage where most of those interviewed had been. Of those who go on pilgrimages, 44% do so during religious holidays. Besides the celebrations dedicated to the Virgin Mary, Romanians will go on pilgrimages and Easter, the Feast of the Holy Paraskeva, Christmas or at churches or monasteries patrons.

Of those who were at least once in a pilgrimage, 83% say that they intend to do so in the future and among the destinations they prefer there are Arsene Boca ‘s grave - Prislop (18%), the monasteries of Moldova (15%), Israel (11%).
Regarding the financial support of the Church, 70% of respondents pay an annual fee to the church / parish to which they are alloted and over three quarters (77%) say they make donations when they go to church in amounts ranging from under 50 lei (25%) to 200 lei (11%).


The survey also revealed that 96% of Romanians believe in God, 89% believe in soul, and as many believe in sin, 85% believe in angels, 75% believe in heaven, 66% believe in the devil and as many in hell and 64% believe in life after death.

The IRES survey was conducted between August 13 to 14 on a sample of 1,001 individuals of 18 years and older, multi-layered, probabilistic, nationally representative, by means of CATI (computer assisted telephone interviewing). The maximum permissible error is 3.1%.
