Prime Minister Victor Ponta participated Saturday in Carei at the ceremonies organized to celebrate the  Romanian Armed Forces Day and reminded that October 25 was also the   birthday of  King Michael, whom he  thanked for what he did for  the country's integrity.

“It is a day of special significance and I, on behalf of the Romanian Government, because today, October 25 is the birthday of His Majesty King Michael, I want  to wish him  "Happy Birthday", good health and thank him for what he did for our national integrity and identity",  Ponta said.

"70 years ago, here, through a very difficult sacrifice, the  Romanian Army corrected  that which the  politicians, wrongly did, bringing suffering to Romania by the Vienna Award when Transylvania, part of the Romanian country, of  Romania, of the Romanian people, was removed from the country’s whole and I think it is time to thank the Romanian Army and commit  that such tragedies  should never be allowed in our country again and  against the Romanian people ", Ponta said.

The prime minister also stressed that the Army and the Church were the ones  which, in times of distress, maintained their identity and national unity.

"I really mean that the Army, the Church, the Royal House have supported us in difficult times and we, the new generation, we have an obligation to carry these values forward. On behalf of the Government, but I think we must announce and support the Romanian Army not only to thank them appreciating their service not only over  the last 10 or 20 years, but since the War of Independence, and  we also have an obligation to provide the  Romanian Army with the supply it needs to successfully accomplish all missions, " Victor Ponta said.

The prime minister said that after a difficult period in which financial resources were allocated to the Romanian Army "at a totally inadequate level", over the past two years the budget of the Ministry of Defense had increased.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta attended the Army’s Day events accompanied by several ministers. The ceremony was also attended by President Traian Basescu.

Saturday marks 70 years since the time of October 25, 1944, from Carei, which represented  the final victory of the Romanian Army in fighting the Hungarian-German troops.
