Prime Minister Victor Ponta said Tuesday during the National Anthem Day, that "Awake, Romanian!" is a symbol of the dignity regained by a nation that has been through difficult times, Mediafax reports.

"In the world increasingly rushed up that we live in, where it seems that a roller leveler passes over identities, an anthem such as “Awake, Romanian!" seems to be an anachronism. Yet it is above all a symbol of the regained dignity of a nation that has been through difficult times and history, the Romanian nation, " Prime Minister says on his Facebook page in a message posted to celebrate the National Anthem Day.

Ponta recalled that the anthem "Awake, Romanian!" became known during the revolutionary year of 1848, which changed the face of Europe.

"Our national anthem was written by the Transylvanian poet Andrei Muresan in 1842, music by Anton Pann. The poem was published in the Leaflet for the mind, heart and literature' by George Bariţiu under the original title of 'An echo." The song remained in the consciousness of the Romanian people everywhere under the name of Awake, Romanian!' and welcomed the revival of the Romanian nation, in the days of the 1989 Revolution, " Victor Ponta recalls.

The Prime Minister added that the election of the new anthem of Romania, returned to democracy came naturally and imposed itself as such.

"To fully understand its meaning, we must know the whole history, with its good and less good and to learn the lessons it teaches us. This year, by your vote, we must regain our dignity after ten years of a political regime of the good will, which prejudiced democracy, the credibility of the institutions, and a long series of economic and social failures.

It's time for a new 'awakening' of the nation, who can build its future in line with the needs and expectations of the Romanian citizens in an Europe facing a lot of challenges. Honoring our anthem, honor our ancestors, our national history and express our desire to live in freedom. Romania future has two clear benchmarks: the dignity of its citizens, of the nation and people’s freedom to decide their fate. With these two parts, we cannot go wrong, " the PM says.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta attended Tuesday along Deputy PM Gabriel Oprea, Mayor Sorin Oprescu, and Defense Minister Mircea Dusa, the military ceremony dedicated to National Anthem Day held in the Tricolor Square, in front of the National Military Club.
