Prime Minister Victor Ponta said on Thursday at the end of the Euromoney Regional Conference for Finance and Investment in South-Eastern Europe that Romania's accession to the Eurozone is a political decision, economic and symbolic, given that our country will take over the EU presidency in 2019.
Ponta said that a possible referendum on the subject can only be convened by the President of Romania, showing that, in his opinion, it would be a good idea because it is "an extremely important change."
"The issue of referendum is not my idea, but I saw it in the public debates, certainly there is no question that we have it now. Let's see, in 2017, 2018 if we are prepared on the technical side. It will be a political decision then. (...) the Romanians are pro-European and PROEURO, provided we inform them well what it means, " Ponta said.
Ponta stressed that joining the Eurozone would be a political decision, economic and symbolic, which will be taken in about three years, when Romania will take over the EU presidency.
