"My opinion is that the current president, Mr. Basescu has got no legitimacy to propose anything and that of course the new president will propose to the parliamentary majority in December - because it takes a vote in Parliament – the new chief of the Foreign Intelligence Service ", Ponta said.
"For now, the first deputy has got all the jurisdiction and powers necessary to continue for another two months, or how long it is, how long Mr. Basescu has still got, for a couple of months to manage it very well," the premier continued.
Ponta stressed that General Silviu Predoiu, deputy director of SIE, who ensures the service management during this period, is a person with experience and has led the institution as interim in 2006.
President Traian Basescu sent on Monday a letter to the chairmen of the Senate and Chamber of Deputies in which he asks them to take note of Melescanu's resignation from the post of Director of SIE and declare it vacant..
Meleşcanu resigned from SIE’s management and will run in the presidential elections this fall, on behalf of the Social Justice Party.
