President Klaus Iohannis and Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Saturday morning attended, in the Union Square, in Iasi City, the ceremonies organised by the local authorities marking the 156th anniversary since the unification of Moldavia with Wallachia (Tara Romaneasca), inaugurated with the playing of the national anthem and military honours.
A religious service was held immediately afterwards by His Eminence Teofan, Metropolitan of Moldova and Bucovina. Attending the event were also local officials, members of the Government, political leaders. Chisinau [Capital City of the Republic of Moldova) Mayor, Dorin Chirtoaca, and Cernauti [a city in Ukraine, home to a large community of Romanians] Mayor, Oleksi Kaspruk were also present. The two are also to signed a protocol between them on education and culture, on this occasion.
