Klaus Iohannis had two important meetings in Germany with President Joachim Gauck and Angela Merkel. In the statement after meeting with Angela Merkel, President Iohannis said that Romania can count on Germany's support for finding a solution to move towards achieving the goal of joining the Schengen area.

"Germany is not only the main economic partner of Romania, but also one of the most important dialogue partners within the EU, and in the international sphere," said Klaus Iohannis after meeting with Angela Merkel.

President Iohannis also said that in the discussion with Chancellor Angela Merkel they also addressed the accession to the Schengen area topic.

"We count on Germany’s support to find a solution to move towards achieving this goal," said Iohannis.

The president said that there are convincing arguments for the removal of the remaining reserves on Romania’s accession to the Schengen area, giving the example of the European Commission's latest MCV report and the demonstrated contribution of Romania to ensure security in the region.

In turn, Angela Merkel said she enjoyed the visit of President Klaus Iohannis, who is a representative of the German minority in Romania. German Chancellor also said he hoped that relations between Romania and Germany will become better and make a step forward in terms of cooperation on European issues.

"We do work closely under NATO too and so we will do from now on. We talked about strengthening the rule of law, on fighting corruption, about justice. The EU noted that Romania has made progress and will continue on this path" Angela Merkel said after the meeting with Klaus Iohannis.

Asked if a decision could be taken this year on Romania’s Schengen accession, the German Chancellor said she could not promise, but noted the recent positive MCV reports for our country, stressing that next steps in this regard will be discussed.

"The latest reports have been positive and we believe that further reforms will be implemented consistently and we will discuss the next steps. I cannot promise now."

Chancellor Merkel also said that she understood that Romania expected an answer on this subject.

Klaus Iohannis and Angela Merkel answered the questions asked by the journalist present at the press conference in Berlin:

The official welcome ceremony took place at the Bellevue Palace in Berlin, at 13.00 GMT.

The two presidents attend a working lunch where they will discuss Romania's accession to the Schengen Area and the situation in Ukraine.
Before going to Germany, Iohannis was on his first official visit to Chisinau where he met with President Nicolae Timofti.
