A malaria patient from Romania died at the Victor Babes hospital in Bucharest.
The 62 year-old man was from Constanta, a seaport in South-Eastern Romania. He was a sailor who had recently returned from the Ivory Coast where he probably contracted the disease, doctors say.
At the same hospital in Bucharest there is a second patient suffering from malaria - a 46 year-old aeroplane pilot.
The man, residing in Bacau, a city in north-eastern Romania, was rushed to the Victor Babeş hospital in Bucharest on Tuesday.
