The Hungarians People Party of Transylvania (PPMT) leadership, who expressed their support for Iohannis before the 2nd round of the presidential elections, believe that another date should be chosen for the celebration of the National Day of Romania, to be accepted by the Hungarians.
The executive chairman of PPMT Sfântu Gheorghe, Zoltan Bedo, stated Tuesday during a press conference that December 1 had different meanings for Romanians and Hungarians therefore another date should be set to mark the National Day to have a common meaning.
"My opinion and that of the organization I represent is that it is not good to celebrate on December 1 the National Day. For Romanians it is a celebration day and you have what to celebrate, but not for us, especially because we do not have the same rights (...) Another date should be chosen, there are many common dates (...) it would be a step towards normality to be chosen another day which we should celebrate together. But that does not mean we do not respect the National Day, that we do not respect the Romanians, but no one should expect us to celebrate on December 1st, " Zoltan Bedo said.
