The legislative proposal signed by 22 MPs, banning smoking in public spaces, was adopted on Wednesday by the Senate; the law will go to the Chamber of Deputies, as the decision-making body, Mediafax reports.

The legislative proposal to amend Law no. 349/2002 on preventing and combating the effects of tobacco products was passed by the Senate with 86 votes "for", 8 abstentions and 30 votes against.

The legislative proposal to ban smoking in public places has been on the agenda of the Senate plenary on February 18, when at the proposal of senator Dumitru Pelican, leader of the liberal-conservative senators , the enactment was referred back to the Committee on Health to be amended within the purpose of introducing into the bill text the possibility that smoking areas should be arranged in public institutions.

Moreover, the law stirred contradictory discussion in the Senate’s plenary.

Referred back to the Health committee, the senators decided on March 10 that they should keep the bill without amendments, in the sense of completely forbidding smoking in public places.

The legislative proposal bans smoking completely in the area of the public authorities and institutions of central and local institutions and the schools, and public and private health care facilities.
