The Antena 3 investigation about the alleged bribery received by the brother of former President Traian Basescu to help Bercea Mondial, get out from jail, circled the foreign press.
The news was taken over by the big media agencies AP, AFP and Reuters which wrote that Mircea Băsescu, the former president’s brother was detained.

France-Presse wrote that the prosecutors action was triggered by the investigation conducted by Antena 3.
EurActiv also wrote that the then president, Traian Basescu, was pressured to resign for alleged bribery that affected his family. Finally, the newspaper Washington Post wrote that Basescu denied the information.

On November 26 the Court of Appeal Constanta decided that Mircea Basescu, who was in custody from June 20, should be tried under house arrest, in the case file concerning the bribe received from Bercea Mondial’s family. The same decision was taken for Marian Căpăţână, tried in the same case.
The president’s brother is accused that during the period February 20, 2011 – February 22, 2012, he allegedly received 250.000 euro from the son of Bercea Mondial, Florin Anghel, brokered by Marian Căpăţână, to intervene with the judges to order a favorable solution in the case file in which Sandu Anghel is tried for attempted murder, for having stabbed a nephew.
Investigators argue that in exchange for money, Mircea Băsescu had allegedly promised to intervene with the judges to order a lesser sentence for Bercea Mondial or even have him freed.

On June 20, the brother of president Mircea Băsescu, was placed in the City Police custody after the magistrates of the Bucharest court decided the remand of the defendant for 30 days, decision challenged be for the Court of Appeal.
