The number of children in Romania has gone down by half since the beginnings of 1990 until 2013. While in the early 1990s, there were over 6.6 million children in Romania, currently there are less than 3.7 million children.

Also, the ratio between the children living in the rural areas and those living in the urban areas has shifted, the number of children born in the rural areas being large than in the urban areas.

The weighting of children in the overall population decreased to a level almost equal to 1990, from approximately 28 to 29% in 1990 in both residence areas of up  to 16.5% in urban and 20.2% in rural areas in 2013, National Strategy protection and promotion of children's rights says.

The phenomenon of teenage births remains worrying in Romania, where more than one in ten children is born to a mother under 20 years.

This reflects a lack of family planning, a lack of education in  sexual and reproductive health, especially for socially vulnerable groups.
