The Romanian Foreign Ministry took note with surprise of the comments made by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman about some statements of the Romanian party and considers that the temptation to transfer the serious crisis the Russian Federation is undergoing in its relations to European community towards the bilateral relations area, is unsubstantiated.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman, Brânduşa Predescu stated in a press release sent to Mediafax that "the Foreign Ministry took note with surprise of the comments by the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich, in connection with some recent statements by the Romanian party about the situation in Ukraine.

"Romania has supported and continues to support, together with its partners in the EU and NATO and under quite similar terms the need to respect the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. This is the main position of Romania, consistently displayed in other similar contexts, whereby internationally recognized borders were amended unilaterally or questioned, ignoring the fundamental principles of international law", said the spokesman of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Brânduşa Predescu states that "the temptation of the Russian MFA to transfer the serious crisis they the Russian Federation is experiencing currently in its relationship with the European and Euro-Atlantic community towards the bilateral relations area with Romania is unsubstantiated and is a mistake."

"It is unfortunate that the positive accumulations during 2013 in the Romanian-Russian dialogue are relativized by our partners in Moscow, in the context where Romania's position does not seek anything other than to ensure a sustainable climate of stability and predictability in Europe" Predescu further states.

Russia warned Romania Friday on account of some "anti-Russian" statements by Traian Băsescu related to the crisis in Ukraine, Moscow emphasized that a deterioration of the relationships did not benefit any of the parties, AFP reports.

Romania denounced in March the Russian "aggression" in Crimean and the “illegal" referendum which led to the annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea to Russia. President Traian Basescu called for a “repositioning" of NATO forces in Europe.
