The Romanian Intelligence Service has been working intensively with prosecutors over the past year. Over 3800 information notes were issued by the SRI for the prosecutors support in 2013, compared to 3300 issued in 2012.
DNA received last year 958 of them compared to 860 in 2012 . A large number of reports were sent to DIICOT who received 786, compared to about 600 in 2012 . The number of briefings made for the Prosecutor General has doubled over the past year. Prosecutors here have received 51 reports compared to only 25 two years ago.
The activity report also shows that the SRI has sent nearly 6,000 briefings to its legal beneficiaries on issues of national security, foreign policy, terrorism or organized crime. The main beneficiaries of the reports issued in the last year were the Government and the Presidential Administration. Nearly 70 percent of these went to the Executive, while one in five reports were sent to the Presidency.
In its work concerning domestic politics, SRI claims to have found a high level of corruption in the public institutions amid political and social instability. In the central and local public administration, SRI has found illegitimate interest groups willing to serve the interest of some individuals and legal entities.
The espionage activity carried out by intelligence services from various Eastern and Asian countries, especially in the category of cyber-espionage poses a high risk for national security.
The SRI reports also says that in 2013 there was a high risk that Al Qaeda and jihadi activist would transit the country. Moreover, Romania is a place of refuge for immigrants, but also for those who belong to fundamentalist structures.
