- 11 June 1990 - Vasile (29) and Maria (27) are coming back from a party. They start arguing. Vasile kills his wife and then he kills himself leaving three children orphans (two girls of 3 and 7 respectively and a 5 year-old boy)
- Mioara Iliuţ, the children’s aunt, argues that he was contacted by Klaus and Carmen Iohannis three days after the tragedy.
- two months later, 14 August 1990, the Tribunal of Sibiu, through the civil sentence no. 13/1990, issued the adoption certificate on behalf of the Canadian citizens
- By the same court ruling, the couple adopted a four months girl (the couple had another two children)
- the case was investigated by DIICOT in 2000. The prosecution office attached to the Tribunal of Sibiu dropped the investigations in 2000
- 23 April 2001, Maria Iliuţ, the grandmother of the three children filed a complaint with the prosecution office
The case was investigated by the Commission for Investigation of Abuse, Corruption and Petitions of the Chamber of Deputies, following a memorandum addressed by Maria Iliuţ to President Iliescu
