The news that Prime Minister Victor Ponta is prosecuted and President Klaus Iohannis demanded his resignation put again Romania on the front pages of the international press. Foreign commentators place yesterday's events in the context of more intense activity of DNA, as of late.

The Bucharest correspondent to the Associated Press revealed that Prime Minister Victor Ponta had refused to resign as the president of Romania had asked him, following allegations of the DNA.

"The prime minister had not hitherto been identified as a suspect in the anti-corruption offensive that has seen more than a thousand convictions last year," writes the Associated Press.

"The prime minister had been repeatedly accused of" bias” by DNA after he opened files for many politicians. Graduate of Law, Social Democrat Ponta was himself an anti-corruption prosecutor between 1998 and 2001," Die Welt writes.
"DNA has arrested several known persons in recent months, placing under investigation former ministers, media magnates, judges and prosecutors. Among them Elena Udrea, Minister of Tourism and presidential candidate. DNA investigations were extended to Mr. Ponta’s mother, sister, brother in law and father in law " BBC reports.

The correspondents of the Reuters agency are dealing with the likely political consequences of the investigation.
"The unexpected investigation of Ponta could increase instability in a country which has passed through this situation many times in the past quarter century since communist dictatorship removal," Reuters notes.

French daily Le Monde places the events in the context of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism.

"Romania and neighboring Bulgaria, are being watched closely by the European Union in the fight against corruption and judicial independence. In his last report, of late January, the EU found that Romania" is on track, but with remarks ", recalls Le Monde.
The Bloomberg agency, specializing in economy, quotes some Londoner analysts’ comments on the situation in Romania.
"I think Ponta will try to pass through this storm, as he has done in the past and the most likely scenario is that he will survive the current motion of censure" Otilia Dhanda, Teneo Intelligence analyst quoted by Bloomberg said.
