Foreign Minister, Titus Corlăţean, decried Sunday, the incidence involving an Italian local counselor who hit a Romanian citizen.
"As a Minister, Romanian and European, I can only condemn in the strongest terms this deeply insulting attitude against Romanians. It is deeply regrettable, all the more since this is about a local councilor in Italy, a country with which Romania has profound relationships with. We do not only condemn such attitudes, we will also notify that through diplomatic channels. The conduct of a local councilor with a wandering mind could engender a more visible wider attitude towards the Romanian community and we cannot accept such a thing. We cannot accept that such statements remain unpunished. "
The official explained that it is important for the Romanian community to receive an official position of the Italian authorities.
"The Romanian community in Italy is the largest foreign community in this country and has an important role in the economy. Naturally, it deserves respect. It is respected by the Italian Prime Minister Renzi, but it should also be visible to the European community too. Italian authorities should state their public disapproval of such a gesture. It is important for Romanians in Italy to hear the reaction from the Italian government. The relations between governments, between states, they are very good. "
