President Traian Basescu spoke Monday afternoon at the Cotroceni Palace about the situation in Ukraine, seen in the perspective of the recent decisions of the European Council of 16 July.
"At first I presented to you the measures of the European Union, and our analysis related to the types of conflicts taking place in eastern Ukraine," President Traian Basescu said.
"It is time for Europe to put in the forefront the situation of its citizens, the safety of its citizens. 192 Europeans were killed, and I personally do not believe that their lives are more precious than the lives of the poor Ukrainians dying in the East, but now we are facing a different reality. Because we have not discouraged Putin at the right time, because there is a conflict going on in the Eastern Europe politically fueled by Russia with people and equipment, Thursday afternoon 192 Europeans died.
"If we had been more resolute and placed the value of people above anything else, couldn’t we have taken the discouragement measures in time? Today it is Ukraine, it will get to the Baltics border, to Poland, to Romania. Don’t we risk making the economic commandments more important than the solidarity with the countries in the Eastern flank?, president Traian Băsescu stated related to the situation in Ukraine.
