Traian Basescu was subpoenaed by the Bucharest Court to provide some  explanations about his  collaboration with the Secret Police. The President will have to appear before the court at the next hearing of the case pending

The National Council for the Study of the Secret Archives ruled  that the president did not collaborate with the Secret Police, but this decision was challenged in court because evidence was found which had not been taken into account when the verdict was given.

In  2004, the Ministry of Defense confirmed that  Traian Băsescu was a collaborator of the counterintelligence military service.

Over the year, former officers of the Secret Police and inspectors in the Institute of Marine have spoken about the president’s connections with the former Secret Police.

"I think that during this  appearance Traian Basescu will not be able to bypass one of the most important evidence, namely the Ministry of Defense document that in 2004 certified that Basescu in his capacity of student at the Institute of Civil Marine became a  collaborator of the military counterintelligence, " Radu Tudor said, in a telephone intervention on  Antena 3.

Traian Basescu admitted on 17 September at a TV station that he provided "trucks of reports" to the Secret Police , when he was ship commander. Moreover, the President argues that he felt  a huge relief  when he had the courage to make  public that information.

On his  relationship to the Secret Police,  Traian Basescu commented that he was targeted after two of the ships he commanded sank.

Former inspector of the Ministry of Transport, Ştefan Mihuţ, member of the Commission which  investigated Traian Basescu  made a series of revelations in 2012 about the time the president was commander of the ship.

“I do remember at a certain time, when Băsescu offended engineer Vulpe, the best expert in naval engineering, saying that he had no idea about ships construction, I snapped at him: If only part of the data in this file is real, you can go to jail… To which Băsescu’s quick answer was: I do not know which one of us is likely to go to jail sooner. And I will never forget that long laugh of young cocky punk, the then commander Băsescu. I left the office angry and right afterwards I have been contacted by Nicuşor Dumitru, the chief of Constanta Harbour Security and  the  prime secretary of Constanta, Mr. Vâlcu. The latter took me by the arm, pulled me in the corner and told me: I have received an order from the top. Let it rest and take it as it is…. This one is an undercover officer and even the comrade knows about the case”.
