Prime Minister Victor Ponta has conveyed Saturday a message on the occasion of the commemoration of the Roma Holocaust that happened 71 years ago and calls on all Romanians to observe a minute's silence in remembrance of the victims who died at Auschwitz , or in the concentration camps in Transnistria and Bug mediafax.ro reports.
"71 years ago, in one day, on 2 August, nearly 3000 Roma - children, women and men – from the Gypsy family camp in Auschwitz were sent to the gas chambers, adding up to the many thousands of other Roma exterminated in Porajmos, the long forgotten Holocaust of the Roma "reads a press release of the Government.
In the press release, the Prime Minister stated that: "On this day, the international community remembers with respect the genocide against the Roma, commemorating one of the few attempts to revolt against barbarism and dehumanization, while celebrating solidarity, tolerance and understanding among the citizens of the world ".
"The Romanian Government welcomes the initiative of the Roma civil society in our country to commemorate together this tragic moment in the modern history of humanity and invites all Romanian citizens to observe a minute's silence in remembrance of the victims who perished at Auschwitz , or in concentration camps in Transnistria and the Bug ", reads the communiqué of the Executive.
