The Court of Appeal in Bucharest is expected to pass sentence on the Alexandru Visinescu case today.
The 90 year-old defendant is the former commander of the communist labour camp in Râmnicu Sărat. Visinescu, who oversaw the extermination regime in that brutal prison, is charged with crimes against humanity.
Prosecutors say he is responsible for the torture and death inflicted on political prisoners between 1956 and 1963. The Prosecution asks for a sentence of 25 years in prison.
