The US Embassy in Romania reacted yesterday to Prime Minister Victor Ponta's going before judges. American officials made it clear that the Judiciary and other vital constituents of the rule of law must enjoy full independence in a healthy democracy.
"All state institutions and actors must assume responsibility for respecting and protecting this independence. Both the fair trial principle and the Romanian legislation must be fully observed", the American Embassy in Bucharest said on Sunday.
